The amount of cases of elder abuse are on the rise. The problem currently is the increase of elder abuse cases but a lack of funding and resources to assist this aging population. It is important for us all to raise awareness for this pertinent social problem and attempt to raise interest as well as raise money for this important cause.

The reason for the increase of elder abuse cases can be due to many factors. One factor in particular may be due to the economy  Many individuals are struggling to find work or pay their bills. Due to the lack of income many individuals may have to care for the elderly individual themselves as opposed to hiring someone to come to the house or placing them in a nursing facility. Moreover, many families may have to miss work to care for an elderly family member. On the other hand,  many family members are overwhelmed and stressed because they work full time then when they return to their home they are caring for their elderly family member.

It is important that we not only provide resources for the elderly individuals but that we also provide resources and assistance for their family members. In many communities there are support groups or resources for these families. If you are unsure of the resources available to you in your community you may want to contact your local city hall for a list of resources.
