When is Mediation an Option?

When it comes to child support, each parent is equally responsible for the financial needs of his/her child. Thus, if you desire child support from your partner, you must ask for a court order. This can be done from the court or through a local child support agency.  The cases for parents who are married to each other are: Divorce, Domestic Violence Restraining Order, Petition for Custody and Support of Minor Children, and Local Child Support Agency Case. The cases for parents who are not married are: Parentage Case, Domestic Violence Restraining Order, Petition for Custody and Support of Minor Children, and Local Child Support Agency Case.

After you start a case, you may request for a child support order. First, you, along with the other parent, need to agree on the amount of a child support order, which should follow the California Guideline Child Support. Then, you must write up your agreement and sign your agreement (stipulation). Next, you would turn in your stipulation to the court for the judge to sign and then file your stipulation after the judge signs it.
