Due to the increasing number of cases of elder abuse, it is important to be well versed on information on elder abuse. Elder abuse often goes unnoticed due to the elderly individual not speaking out. Reasons vary as to why the elderly do not report the abuse. Abuse can occur in the home or in a live in nursing facility. It is important to visit the care facilities before sending someone you know and love there. You may want to visit several and also inquire from others who have used a particular care facility.
Some physical signs of abuse could be any lacerations, bruises or red marks. In addition, if you notice a change in the elderly individual's demeanor this could be an indication of physical or emotional abuse. Checking in with the elderly on a frequent basis will help you better access the treatment they are receiving in any care facility. Due to the vulnerability of this population it is important that family and friends of the elderly keep a watchful eye out for those who may attempt to deceive or take advantage of seniors in our community.
The most important thing is to report any abuse you feel is occuring. Please call Adult Protective Services to report the abuse immediately if you feel an elderly individual you know is enduring abuse. Adult Protective Services will conduct a full and thorough investigation into the matter. In addition, please be sure to educate the elderly individual's you know in regards to resources they have available to them. Some of the elderly individual's may be unsure of what resources they have and who they contact for help or support.
