Mediation is at times an alternative for couples seeking divorce. The reason for the preference could be the lower cost. Divorces can cost more depending on your specific matter and whether both parties are agreeable on the divorce issues at hand. Furthermore, mediation is voluntary for both parties. The benefit is when both parties show up to a mediation session they may have a better attitude and be optimistic due to having the option to attend or not.

Additionally, mediation is something both parties can attempt and if it does not work they may choose the traditional divorce route. Sometimes it is worth a try to see if an amicable agreement can be reached with the guidance of a mediator.

Mediators will not give advice or sway the parties to feel one way or another. The mediator is there to support the parties in reaching a fair and appropriate decision. It is important that whichever mediator is used remain a neutral third party. Furthermore, both parties are entitled to speak regarding their issues and feelings and it is up to the mediator to employ various strategies to aid in the discussion.
