Elder abuse education is extremely important these days. The number of elder abuse cases have been on the rise. In comparison to the number of cases reported there is not enough funding to hire on the number of staff members required to assist with preventing elder abuse. Elder abuse can occur in any community, any race, age, or sex. It is important to educate one another on prevention, support groups and raising awareness.
Elder Abuse can consist of neglect, lack of food, lack of shelter, failing to address health care needs, physical, emotion, or financial abuse. The types of abuse listed are not an extensive list but are some examples of the types of elder abuse that may occur.
Further, seniors may be hesitant to report the abuse due to fear, or uncertainty of what will happen if they report it. We should encourage seniors we know, or those in our community to speak out so that the abuse will stop. In addition, we can inform them that by speaking out against their abusers they may be reducing the likelihood of it occurring, or continuing to occur with other seniors throughout the community.
