Divorce attorneys in California may soon be handling much more family law for same-sex couples. On Tuesday, February 7th, the federal appeals court based in San Francisco ruled California's Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage, unconstitutional. The 2-1 decision reaffirmed an earlier 2010 decision made by the court without the panel. Judge Stephen Reinhardt wrote in the ruling that "Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California, and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples"

While this case is a favorite of many to be appealed to the Supreme Court, for now at least the question of whether states have the right to ban gay marriage may be temporarily answered. However, it is important to note that the ninth circuit court of appeals is one of the most overturned courts by the Supreme Court and whether or not the conservative court will side with the lower federal courts is still unsure.
