The Marriage Movement, also known as the Divorce Reform Movement, started in 1999 in an attempt to decrease the divorce rate. Some of the proposals to reduce marriage included requiring both spouses’ consent for a no-fault divorce, introducing optional “covenant marriage,” and pre-marital counseling requirements.
Throughout the years, the Marriage Movement found numerous findings on the causes of divorce and the effect on children. Researchers have found that the biggest reason for divorce was because people would slowly give up on their marriage and not put enough work into maintaining the marriage.
Psychologists have also discovered that divorce has many negative effects on children such as increase in emotional problems, teen pregnancy, drug and alcohol problems, poverty, crime, etc.
